This is the first installment of our “Enjoying Your Motorcycle” series.

Jeff and I have been riding together for over 25 years. We’ve seen a lot of different sites and had a ton of fun along the way.

On our ride this past Thursday exploring some back roads.

Like most people, we are creatures of habit. We drive the same route to work, eat the same sandwich for lunch, and watch the same TV shows at night.

Routine is great. It keeps you on track, it’s comfortable and easy. But sometimes it’s good to shake up the routine- like eat something different for lunch or watch a movie you’ve never seen. Mixing it up keeps life fresh. Doing something different is fun.

We have found that our riding routine also needs to get shaken up. If we take the same route every time we ride, eventually we’ll be bored and then riding won’t seem as fun.

If you’ve followed our Day Rides, you know we’ve done a lot of planned rides to destinations within a 150 mile radius of our home. It’s something we love to do. But recently, we’ve been exploring just the outer reaches of Knoxville- just taking back roads, making turns down the next road, without a plan but with a curious spirit. Lately we’ve traveled down roads within 50 miles of our home that we’ve never been on in our life!

Guinn Road Park just a few miles from Biker Rags.

It’s exciting to see where other people in our community call home. We also get to see what kinds of small businesses thrive in the outer reaches of our surrounding counties, and to experience the beauty and serenity of the countryside that is often lost to us city dwellers. (And we happen to think all those goats in the country are really darned cute!)

Lots of back roads to explore!

While there’s nothing wrong with traveling the same roads when you ride, next time mix it up a little. Turn down that side road you’ve passed a million times but never explored. Even if you circle back to where you started, you’ll have a grin on your face and probably think, “So that’s where that road goes!”

Get on your bike why don’t ya and keep riding fun!
