WIN BY A KICK by Pam Huggins
Jeff and Pam Huggins, owners of Biker Rags, staged an impromptu contest Saturday March 24, 2007 during their Antique Motorcycle Show. Members of the Time Warp VMC and various other antique motorcycle enthusiasts attended the show. Jeff as always displayed several of his own collection. Jeff had been eager to get his WWII era military BSA up and running. Since all the experts were on hand- what better time to do so!
First he asked the Triumph expert to start the bike. After half an hour, the expert declared it "bottom soaked" and rejoined the show crowd. Jeff then called upon the other experts to assist him in his quest. The experts pontificated about gas in the tank, spark in the plug, setting of the advance and kicked, and kicked, and kicked. Occasionally a small puff of smoke would appear and Jeff declared, "Fifty dollars to the guy who can start this bike!" Well- the enthusiasts pontificated and officiated some more and kicked, and kicked, and kicked.
Finally Jeff sought out Tim Miles, AKA master mechanic, long haired Harley scum, and all around bad ass kicker. Tim arrived in his usual calm demeanor and boyish good looks.
The experts looked doubtful as Tim sized up the green beast. He briefly checked the bike, adjusted the advance asking only a few quiet questions. He began to kick.
Within half a dozen kicks, the motor emitted a loud cleansing cough. The gathering crowd quieted in hopeful anticipation. Another kick, then another AND THE ENGINE ROARED TO LIFE!
The crowd roared to life as well in appreciation of the green beast succumbing to the action of Tim's well-timed and powerful kick. The basement quickly filled with black smoke and the green beast poured oil from its chest.
The beast was alive and well and Jeff took his maiden voyage right then and there.
Tim received his well-earned prize and Pam was heard to say, "Best fifty dollars in entertainment I've had all year!
